They solve different problems
Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster, hand-polished with stone to a soft, slightly uneven sheen. It's waterproof enough for a shower when sealed correctly, which is where it originated. Microcement is a modern, factory-formulated coating that goes on thinner and more uniformly, and it's the better choice when you want a flatter, more consistent look — over a fireplace surround, a kitchen island, or a large accent wall.
Texture and look
Tadelakt has visible hand-applied variation by nature — that's the appeal, not a flaw. If you want a finish that looks machine-made, tadelakt will always look a little 'off' to you. Microcement can be finished smoother and more even, closer to polished concrete, which is why it works well in more minimalist, modern interiors.
Cost and application time
Tadelakt is more labor-intensive — multiple hand-applied layers, then burnishing with a stone, then sealing with olive-oil soap — which puts it at the higher end of specialty finishes. Microcement is faster to apply and seal, so it typically costs less for the same square footage, though both are priced well above standard paint.
Our honest recommendation
For a shower or wet area where you want that traditional, slightly imperfect hand-finished look: tadelakt. For a large, flat, modern-feeling wall — especially a fireplace surround or kitchen — microcement usually gives a cleaner result for less. We'll always make you a physical sample board in your chosen color before starting either one, so you're approving the real texture, not a photo.
